The Lancaster Tax Auditor's office bills all personal property taxes in Lancaster County.

Personal property which is taxable:

  • Automobiles
  • Trucks
  • Motorcycles
  • Motor Homes
  • Boats
  • Watercraft
  • Airplanes
  • Campers on permanent sites
  • Automobiles
  • Office Equipment & Furniture used in a business


Motor Vehicles:

Vehicle Taxes are due the month you tag expires. In order to obtain a valid decal for your license plate, vehicle taxes must be paid. Your vehicle may qualify for a discount if you have over 15,000 miles per year. The mileage must be certified on or before the due date to qualify. Vehicle High Milage Form

Returns:

Personal Property Returns are due by April 30th of each year. Businesses, Aircraft, Campers on permanent sites and documented vessels are required to file. Personal Property tax bills on all other property is mailed in October and are due by January 15th. Owners are required to pay this tax unless they qualify for a tax break as a result of a disability or a Non-Profit Status as a church.

The total tax on personal property is based on the value of the property and the taxing district of the property where the owner resides. Personal property is assessed at a rate of 10.5% of its market value, except motor vehicles which are currently for 2002 taxed at 9.75% on personal vehicles which over the next 6 years will drop to a 6% rate.

Citizens living within all municipalities are billed for both county and city taxes on one notice. All property taxes that are current are paid to the county treasurer. Taxes past due after March 16th are paid to the Tax Collector's Office (excluding motor vehicles).


Industries:

Business, manufacturers and Fee-In-Lieu accounts are appraised by the State Department of Revenue but billed by the County Auditor. Questions concerning these notices should contact the Auditor.

Exemptions:

Active Military Personnel who claim to live outside of Lancaster County may be exempt from the personal property taxes if they have proof of legal residence from another state and a copy of their military orders proving they are located in Lancaster County by military orders.

Persons who are disabled or over 65 should contact the County Auditor about exemptions. Homestead exemption law requires you to be disabled or 65 in the year preceding. CLICK HERE to download and print a brochure with more information about qualifiying for homestead exemptions.

Churches and other Non-Profit Organizations must file with the South Carolina Department of Revenue to be exempt.
